Robotics Camp Daily Journal
Day 1- July 30th, 2012
The day began with excitement and a bit of nervousness; however, that was quickly overcome with the fun of learning new concepts and meeting new friends! We (engineers-in-training) were first introduced to their engineer’s notebook which lead us to learn about the uses they have for engineers. As we continued, we learned about RC (remote control) devices and their uses.
This lead to a discussion of the electromagnetic spectrum and the creation of our very own spectrometer! (Which everyone got to take home!) We were asked to become a remote control system, requiring us to code and de-code commands to get marbles from one place to another around our innovation zone (classroom).
Finally, we ended the day learning how to sketch and generating ideas for our Mars Rover group robot! Starting tomorrow we will learn about prototypes and how using the process of decision making helps designers!
Special thanks to Hardees for our taco bar lunch!
Day 2- July 31st, 2012
With even more energy we started the day exploring our sketching and designing rovers on our isometric paper. As we decided on designs we then began building prototypes of our designs with poster board and masking tape. With this technique we were able to see our designs come in 3-D and modify as we thought about each function.
We explored the solar system by making our own model of planet distances with spring and colored beads (each bead representing a different planet). Many of us also learned how to tie knots and working through our difficulties of crafting!
Ending the day, we explored making decisions with a decision matrix; a deciding on a design with our groups which we will create tomorrow!
Special thanks to McDonalds and Arby’s for lunch!
Day 3- August 1st, 2012
With great effort everyone is learning how to work as teams and learning that ideas can be shared and built upon. We began the day working to complete group’s final prototypes. As we completed we figured out we could use our prototypes as templates for our final rover by tracing our designs on cardboard.
As the time got closer to snack time we were given supplies and created solar ovens. As we had already discussed, solar power is just one source of many types of power. Once we completed these we went into the great outdoors and thanked Mother Nature for a wonderfully warm day to cook our smores and enjoy snack!
Thanks to our manufacturing process we now have pieces to assemble our rovers. After a fun time in the gym we came back to learn about how our RC system will work by exploring the motors and assembling our rovers.
For tomorrow, we will finish assembly and begin practicing with our teams!
Special thanks to Zaxby’s and Papa John’s for lunch!
Day 4- August 2nd, 2012
A day filled with building and examining. As our rovers began to take shape we found ourselves examining our design plans even more. Some of us found that our ideas needed fine-tuning while others found their ideas to be design-perfect. With all the changes the rovers are shaping up to be mean-lean Mars Rock collecting machines!
During our day we built rockets and watched the design squad design and develop a tree structure that would support their body weight.
As our day came to an end, we were so excited we lost track of time launching our rockets and examining our success of design and reflecting in how to do better next time!
Looking forward to competition tomorrow at 4pm!
Special thanks to Claudia Sanders and Little Caesars for lunch!

Titan's TSA member makes finals at National Conference this Summer!
Abbie, an 8th grader at Collins, placed 10th at the National TSA Conference in Dallas, Texas in prepared Speech. She was presented with the challenge of writing and delivering at least a 3 minute speech on TSA, A Snapshot of Innovation. The is a great accomplishment for Abbie. There were over 40 states represented and 3 countries. She made it through the first round of judges who narrowed the field of 400 down to 10. With this being Abbie's first year in TSA, she did great! She was competing with students who had been to National Competition with at least two years of experience.
Shelby County had three finalist and the state of Kentucky had a total of nine finalist. Shelby County had the most finalist for the state and Martha Layne Collins made it's name know in the state. MLC was in it's first year as a school with all new TSA members and having a National Finalist, that is high unlikely, but Titan's just win!
